An exhibit on the Jewish origins of American superheroes that explores the influences that drove young Jewish artists to create graphic novels– which gave the world Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman, among others– set to open next month

The exhibit, ZAP! POW! BAM! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950.
will open January 27th at the Jewish Museum of Maryland. It was curated by late Jerry Robinson, a former comic book industry insider who worked closely with Batman co-creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Robinson named Batman’s young protégé, Robin, and is also co-creator of The Joker, Batman’s nemesis.

The Batmobile will be on display and interactive stations will give younger museum-goers the chance to dress up as Superheroes, transforming themselves via a quick costume change in a telephone booth.
