Peter Ammon has served as German Ambassador to the United States since 2011.

Over a 30-year career in the German Foreign Ministry, the Frankfurt-born Ammon has held assignments in London, Dakar and New Delhi. From 1996 to 1999 he was head of the ministry’s policy planning department and served as a presidential speechwriter.

Ammon moved to Washington, DC in 1999 to take up a post as economics minister at the German Embassy, staying until 2001 before transferring back to Berlin for assignments in the foreign office’s economics and sustainable development departments. Ammon was Germany’s ambassador to France from July 2007 to July 2008 before spending the next three years as state secretary at the foreign office.

Ammon is married to Marliese Heimann-Ammon. They have two grown daughters, Ariane and Christina.
